I hope for Stand & Hold to be a resource for filmmakers who strive for excellence in their work but whom also desire to keep balance in their lives. I will from time to time post entries that focus on the technical and/or aesthetic aspects of video production as well as commentary on how our work as filmmakers relates to God and others. There will also be times that I merely use this blog to share what Christ is doing in my life or to shamelessly plug my own projects.
What does Stand and Hold mean?
Contextually it points to the early days of production work when as a P.A. or Grip I was often asked to “stand and hold” this or that, or to set up a c-stand, to hold up that light, etc…
However, the true source and reason for choosing this name comes from scripture.
STAND
The STAND portion comes from the phrase:
STAND FIRM (verb)
- stand up or offer resistance to somebody or something
- refuse to abandon one’s opinion or belief
Galatians 5:1 (ESV) tells us:
For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
HOLD
The HOLD portion comes from the phrase:
HOLD FAST (verb)
- Stick to firmly
Deuteronomy 13:4 (ESV) tells us:
You shall walk after the LORD your God and fear him and keep his commandments and obey his voice, and you shall serve him and hold fast to him.
And in Romans 12:9 (ESV) we read:
Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.
Over the years, integrity, in the midst of the intense process of filmmaking, is an area where I have both failed and grown tremendously.
It is easy to become bitter, hateful and frustrated in the cutthroat environment the production world can create. It can be tempting to put your own video creations ahead of the Creator, and in the process sacrifice your relationships with God, your family and your community.
The Stand and Hold blog entries come from a worldview that is based on the Gospel of Jesus Christ as the center of our devotion. We hope to maintain integrity in all that we do and to develop character in our own video production.
My hope is that this blog will be another tool that the Holy Spirit uses to sharpen our techniques and smooth our rough edges.
STAND & HOLD.
